Do You Know…? Five facts about Pathology

This month marks National Pathology Week (5-11th November 2018) the annual celebration which highlights the important contribution pathology makes to healthcare.

Each year millions of pathology tests are carried out, many of which use solutions offered by HealthTrust Europe.

 

To mark National Pathology Week, here are five facts about pathology you may not know:

1. Do you know….? There are 18 different specialities in pathology including toxicology, cytogenetics, and clinical embryology. So, despite TV portrayals it’s not all about dead bodies, in fact forensic pathologists make up less than 1% of pathologists which is fewer than 100 people in the country. 2. Do you know…? Seventy per cent of all diagnoses in hospital are supported by a pathologist. Pathology services are essential to the delivery of many of the national priorities and targets for the NHS. It is estimated that 70-80 per cent of all health care decisions affecting diagnosis or treatment involve a pathology investigation. Individuals’ treatment decisions, and the monitoring of their response to treatment, is often dependent on a range of pathology-based tests and investigations. 3. Do You Know…? One billion tests are run in the UK each year in pathology labs at a cost of £2.2bn. One hundred and five hospitals in England provide pathology services and the largest provider is Barts NHS Trust which undertakes 26m tests a year. (Source: NHSI)

4. Do You Know…? There can be as many as nine steps in a blood test. HealthTrust Europe’s bespoke healthcare solutions cover the entire journey made by a test specimen which includes:

5. Do You Know…? Pathology isn’t just lab based. It also includes Point of Care Testing (POCT) which refers to any medical test performed by a member of a healthcare team or a patient outside a hospital laboratory, for example, a glucose meter used in a GP surgery, a pregnancy test used in an Accident and Emergency department or a cholesterol test performed in a local pharmacy. How to meet the challenges of migrating to a new operating system

According to the 2017/18 Data Security and Protection Requirements, NHS providers must:

  • Identify unsupported systems (including software, hardware and applications)
  • Have a plan in place by April 2018 to remove, replace or actively mitigate or manage the risks associated with unsupported systems.

Yet many healthcare providers are still running old operating systems such as Windows XP or even Windows Vista. These ‘unsupported systems’ need to be updated to later versions like Windows 10 as a matter of priority.

Why migration is necessary

Old operating systems are breeding grounds for a whole host of weaknesses, dangers and threats. The consequences of a vulnerable OS remaining in active use near to or after its ‘end of support’ date include:

  • Lack of technical support from the developer (Microsoft officially ended support for Windows XP in April 2014 and will cease supporting Windows 7 early in 2020)
  • Significant increase in the cost of any support, where it is still available
  • Increased risk of cyber attacks from emerging threats due to absence of new security patches
  • Potential loss or corruption of sensitive patient data
  • Decreasing compatibility with the latest hardware and software
  • No support for third-party software and peripherals

Of all these considerations, the major drawback of running an unsupported operating system on your PCs and laptops is the security threat. This was highlighted in May 2017 by the rapid spread of the WannaCry ransomware virus across Windows XP machines – causing widespread disruption to businesses, schools and hospitals, including more than a third of NHS trusts in England.

But it’s not just about ensuring your data and systems are properly protected. In a healthcare environment, the key challenge produced by the barriers to migrating from one OS to another is that of maintaining and delivering patient care. Continuity and consistency of information must be maintained throughout the patient pathway, with minimal impact to service.
