School’s in for summer interns at HealthTrust Europe

Students from two local Birmingham universities will be spending their summer at health and care solutions provider, HealthTrust Europe (HTE), gaining valuable work experience skills to enhance their entry into the workplace.

The six internships are based at HTE’s headquarters in Edgbaston, across a range of business disciplines from financial analytics to Legal to marketing.

HealthTrust Europe is a solutions partner for health and care providers, helping them to source the best value products and services to deliver high quality patient care.

Emma Stewart, HR Business Partner said: “As part of our commitment to developing employees of the future we have taken on six interns.

“HealthTrust Europe is a trusted partner for the NHS and commercial health and care providers sourcing a wide range of services and products such as pathology reporting, endoscopy, and consultancy and advisory services. To enable us to do this a broad range of skills and expertise are needed, so we have a wide range of interesting and exciting careers.

“Our staff are extremely knowledgeable and have a wealth of experience in many fields that they are keen to share with our interns.”

The summer-long internships have been offered to five second year students, and one graduate who have been studying a range of disciplines including Law, Biomedical Engineering and Economics at Aston University and the University of Birmingham.

The students have been allocated roles, in line with their studies, which will help them gain valuable experience and knowledge about the workplace before they enter the world of work. As well as gaining sector specific knowledge and learning to use various specialist business software packages such as Salesforce, the interns are also developing essential “soft” skills such as teamwork, problem solving and communications skills. Amidst a tough graduate labour market, the internships are paid the national living wage and are designed to equip students with the best skills to enter the workplace confident and prepared.

Marketing intern, Kiran Mehat said: “Having the opportunity to work in an international organisation like HealthTrust Europe lets me develop my skills in the workplace and give me an idea of the career opportunities that exist.

“HealthTrust Europe really appealed to me as I wanted the opportunity to work for an organisation that is driven by the care and improvement of human life.”

HealthTrust Europe responds to government’s Prevention green paper

Anna Clark, senior director of pharmacy, HealthTrust Europe responded to the publication of the Government’s Prevention Green Paper “Advancing our health: prevention in the 2020s”:

We welcome this week’s Prevention Green paper, which signals a shift towards smarter approaches to healthcare. As a healthcare solutions partner, our mission is to support the care and improvement of human life and help the NHS source the best value products and services to deliver high quality patient care.

“We are particularly pleased with the paper’s focus on screening and Antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We look forward to continuing to work closely on the provision of solutions to tackle the challenges which remain for both areas via our Pathology offering. On AMR we look to further enable the access and use of Point of Care Testing (POCT), a solution which can be used to minimise misuse of antibiotics and ensure appropriate immediate treatment.

Finally, we have increasingly witnessed the importance of mental health prevention and look forward to engaging with the national launch of the Every Mind Matters campaign. We have recently as a business began the roll-out mental health first aid training to all of our staff and will continue to champion the creation of ‘healthy places’ with our colleagues, customers and suppliers.”

HealthTrust Europe rolls out mental health first aid training for staff

  • Fifth of workforce now trained as a mental health first aider
  • Training provided by Birmingham Mind, HealthTrust Europe’s charity of the year
  • HealthTrust Europe announces £5,000 has been raised for the charity in the first half of 2019

Employees at healthcare solutions partner HealthTrust Europe (HTE) are being trained to spot the signs and tackle the stigma of mental illness in the workplace.

The mental health first aid courses are being delivered by Birmingham Mind, the largest independent mental health charity providing services in and beyond the City of Birmingham’s boundaries. The organisation is also HTE’s chosen charity of 2019 and half-way through the year of fundraising the company’s members of staff have raised £5,000.

The initial two-day programme was offered this summer to volunteers across the business which is based in Edgbaston, Birmingham. The aim of the training was to give them the knowledge and confidence to recognise signs of mental health problems, encourage someone to seek the right help, and to reduce the stigma around mental illness. This can range from mild anxiety through to the early signs of depression and suicidal tendencies.

Helen Wadley, chief executive officer of Birmingham Mind, said: “To tackle the stigma of mental health, it is essential that industry works together to support their local communities. It is a pleasure to partner with HealthTrust Europe who are taking proactive steps to place employee wellbeing at the centre of their business and create a healthy working environment.”

“The aim of these courses is to give everyone the knowledge and confidence to recognise signs of mental health problems, encourage someone to seek the right help, and to reduce the stigma around mental illness.”

Initially senior managers anticipated eight to nine staff members would volunteer for the training but were astounded when 26 signed up. Later this year complementary training will be delivered to 35 managers across the business. The next stage will be for all staff members to attend awareness training.

Ian Hadridge, associate vice president of business solutions, said: “As a mission-driven organisation committed to the care and improvement of human life, HealthTrust Europe already delivers comprehensive first-aid training to all employees. To continue this objective and to ensure the health and wellbeing of staff remain of top priority, mental health training is the next logical step to take.

“Like many employers HealthTrust Europe offers a benefits package that provides colleagues access to free, confidential counselling should they want it. However, the new mental health training teaches colleagues to be aware of the signs of mental ill health in others, and advises staff how they can help an individual whether it is in the workplace, at home or in any other setting.”

One in four of people will have problems with their mental health at some point. These problems range from the day-to-day worries that everyone experiences to longer-term serious conditions. Common mental health problems include; anxiety, depression, post-natal depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and phobias. About one in a hundred people will experience severe mental illness.1

Each year, HTE chooses a charity partner in order to raise money and awareness for issues that are at the heart of our communities. Events this year included: a women’s boxing contest; a football match against West Midlands office technology partner, Altodigital; participating in endurance challenge, Wolf Run; and a sponsored haircutting. HTE hope to raise more money throughout the rest of the year.

PHARMACY OPTIMIZATION

Michael Berryhill

HealthTrust manages one of the largest purchasing programs for pharmaceuticals in the GPO market, with billions of dollars of pharmacy spend on the IDN side through HealthTrust, as well as billions of dollars of spend in the employer/pharmacy benefits management space through our CoreTrust business. Historically, this has been delivered through two separate teams within HealthTrust. Michael Berryhill, HealthTrust COO, recently announced the reorganization of our pharmacy program into a single function, focused on strategy and execution of pharmacy optimization.

Joey Dizenhouse

HealthTrust Senior Vice President Joey Dizenhouse now leads the Pharmacy Services Group. With more than 20 years of experience in the health/pharmacy insurance field, he has worked with some of the nation’s largest IDNs and employers and has particular expertise in designing employee benefits/PBM group purchasing programs. Joey officially joined HealthTrust in 2016 after several years of consulting with us.
As part of this redesign strategy, Joey and his team conducted a rigorous RFP process and selected OptumRx as HealthTrust’s exclusive pharmacy care services partner. OptumRx will provide pharmacy benefit solutions intended to support better health outcomes, improved consumer experiences and lower costs. Combined with HealthTrust’s portfolio and pharmacy capabilities, this partnership will enable us to deliver programs that incorporate transparency, flexibility and alignment of incentives between the PBM, employer and patient.

STAFFING RECOGNITION

Brendan Courtney

Another area of our business—HealthTrust Workforce Solutions—was recognized in the first quarter with a “Best of Staffing Client Award” by ClearlyRated for endorsements received from its client organizations. Presented in partnership with CareerBuilder and Indeed, “Best of Staffing” recognition is based on Net Promoter Score—a measure of how likely clients are to recommend an agency to a friend or colleague. With a mission of helping hospitals and health systems fill critical labor vacancies, HealthTrust Workforce Solutions received high ratings from nearly two-thirds of its surveyed clients, indicating they would recommend the agency to others. The rating is significantly higher than the staffing industry average of 35 percent for agencies participating in the annual survey in 2018. Congratulations to president and CEO of HealthTrust Workforce Solutions Brendan Courtney and his team on this recognition.

Promoting nurses, and good mental health

HealthTrust Europe (HTE) has been marking two of this year’s health and care awareness events, International Nurses’ Day and Mental Health Awareness Week. Both were supported by HTE which is a trusted partner for the NHS and commercial health and care providers.

The theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week (13-19th May) was body image – how we think and feel about our bodies. To coincide with both awareness events, HTE welcomed Jim Chapman, RMN, RNT, MA, PGCert, Head of Department for Mental Health and Learning Disabilities, Birmingham City University as a guest speaker to talk to employees. Jim has worked across Birmingham in a range of in-patient and community-based settings. He now manages a team that trains mental health and learning disabilities nursing students to become part of the future workforce. His talk to HTE members of staff referred to a number of topics from the work of mental health nurses, how body image issues can affect all of us at any age, and mental health in the workplace.

HTE has also been celebrating the work of nurses by marking International Nurses Day. The day was devised to recognise the contribution that nurses and allied health professionals make to people’s lives and is celebrated each year on 12th May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.

HTE encouraged members of staff to bring in healthy baked goods, with a prize awarded for the most delicious nutritious snack which was judged to a double ‘chocolate’ vegan brownie Proceeds raised by the sale of the food will be donated to HTE’s charity of 2019 Birmingham MIND. Further donations can be made at HTE’s JustGiving page.

The theme for the 2019 International Nurses Day is Nurses: A voice to lead – Health for All and is marked by health and care providers across the world. Events in the UK included a service in Westminster Abbey, and another at Coventry Cathedral in which one of HTE’s GPO customers, University Hospitals Coventry & Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) participates.

Associate Vice President for Group Purchasing Organisation, Nanette Grant, said: “We’re delighted to celebrate two important awareness days.

“We support nursing services in the communities we serve by being a solutions partner for health and care providers, helping them to source the best value products and services to deliver high quality patient care.”

NHS staff shortages – addressing the challenge

Staffing shortages within the NHS and wider healthcare market continue to be a key challenge across the UK. The media and executive reports highlight a worsening position with little light at the end of the tunnel however there are strategies and solutions that can be adopted to help alleviate some of the pressures of achieving successful outcomes.

It is well documented that the NHS has key worker vacancies across GP, nursing and key allied healthcare worker job roles. Current figures suggest more than 30,000 extra nurses are needed and almost 3,000 GPs1. In March a report was issued by three leading think tanks which predicted that in the next five years nurse shortages will double and GP gaps nearly treble, unless action is taken. The Nuffield Trust, Health Foundation and King’s Fund say on current trends this will rise to nearly 70,000 nurses and more than 7,000 GPs within five years. Report co-author Anita Charlesworth said: “The workforce is the make-or-break issue for the health service. Unless staffing shortages are substantially reduced, the recent NHS Long Term Plan can only be a wish list.” 1

The NHS Long Term plan, which was published in January, outlines its strategy to improve patient care over the next ten years and aims to address the problem by increasing the NHS workforce by training and recruiting more professionals. This will include thousands more clinical placements for undergraduate nurses, hundreds more medical school places, and more routes into the NHS such as apprenticeships, as well as efforts to support improvements in retention.

However, the NHS Long Term plan is just that – long term – and in the meantime many healthcare providers have staffing challenges to address today. Faced with this situation it can be difficult to embed the overall workforce aspirations of an organisation and to build a strategy that will deliver operationally. However, there are some key actions that providers can take to help mitigate some immediate risks and drive a pro-active approach to addressing market challenges.

International recruitment

With the current political uncertainty regarding the UK’s membership of the EU, healthcare providers may have concern over any changes to immigration status. The Home Secretary has extended the minimum salary exemption for overseas nurses wanting to work in the UK up to the next review period in January 2021 to allay concerns. And the government has recently announced that health and social care workers with professional qualifications from EU institutions can continue to practise in the UK after an exit from the European Union. Employment contracts will not need to be changed if the UK leaves without a deal and staff will not have to reapply for their current positions.

Gary Snart is Director of Total Workforce Solutions at HealthTrust Europe (HTE) which operates as a healthcare solutions partner for the NHS and commercial health and care providers, working as a bridge between suppliers and providers. On the topic of international retention and recruitment he advises: “Keeping an open dialogue with existing members of staff who are from the European Union and the Europe Economic Area is paramount. Anyone currently living in the UK who is an EU/EEA citizen has the right to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme by 30 June 20212 in order to  stay in the UK; it is in the interest of providers to offer support and guidance for staff who have applied for this or are required to do so.”

For each staff group that is a recruitment challenge setting up international recruitment projects is a sensible step to take. Gary advises on deciding on a realistic cohort of new recruits that can be on-boarded effectively each month and integrated into an organisation with an excellent experience. He adds: “This will serve to develop word of mouth recruitment between international peers, generating a regular new headcount to improve continuity of care locally and reduce pressure areas such as controlling agency spend.”

Pastoral care offered to new recruits and employees can help organisations retain staff members. Simple steps such as finding out if they are happy at work and feel reassured that there will be a role for them whatever the future holds for the UK can help. Setting up and encouraging social groups and events can help overseas staff feel more secure in their role.  Managers can also ask employees if they need help and guidance to feel settled, such as setting up a British bank account, and if they are in regular contact with family back home.

Manage staffing agencies

There has been criticism in the media of the use of agency staff due to the cost of this route, however most providers use agency staff to some extent. It remains important to engage with agencies to manage requirements effectively. Whilst agency staff do have an important role to play, organisations have to balance the financial cost of agency compared to that of permanent or staff bank workers.

On the topic of how to save money on agency spend Gary believes that there are several tactics and mechanisms that can save healthcare providers money and develop a level of partnership with suppliers that have a shared interest in changing existing market pressures. He said: “It is advisable to approach staffing agencies in an organised and pre-agreed manner, if alternative options are not available it is always advisable not to leave staff requests until the last minute (24-72hrs prior) as time constraints could force providers to agree less favourable terms.”

“If an agency must be used it its desirable to take control from the beginning, using a framework like those provided by HealthTrust Europe that is patient-centred and clinically-led, driving quality, safety, service, and price. Healthcare solutions partners such as HealthTrust Europe provide expertise and guidance as a trusted adviser to healthcare partners, operating independent of the market to develop agreements that work for all parties in the short and long term.”

Gary also advises that healthcare providers use solutions providers to them keep up-to-date on market intelligence on NHSI rate caps and market positions. This can provide them with key data enhancements such as intelligence on local, regional & national average rate data per specialism, grade/band and shift, and which suppliers to contact to get the best fill or adherence to cap in any rota gap sent out to agency.

Workforce Planning Technology

Creative use of IT software can help improve recruitment processes, from planning to vacancy release to executive reporting. Developing something as simple as a database of healthcare workers who are available on a flexible basis could help Trusts and other providers avoid using expensive agency staff and to put more control in-house to enhance collaboration in areas such as bank. Rather than contacting a staffing agency as soon as staff shortages are identified an up-to-date database of known workers can identify available workers to fill vacancies and subsequently help to keep salary costs down.

A lot of time and money is spent by organisations merely scheduling their staff, however technology can help improve workforce planning. Rostering software can produce optimal rosters/rotas that meet safe staffing levels, quickly and easily. They can help managers oversee flexible shift patterns, provide a real time view of staff on duty and the skills available within the workforce to drive performance and control costs. Using e-rostering services can help forecasting and subsequent planning for staffing shortfalls and will display visibility of purchasing. As well as enhancing care quality and safety for patients, rostering IT can increase productivity and improve staff morale.

Steve Barrow, Deputy Director of Finance at Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust worked with HealthTrust Europe to embed a collaborative agency project for healthcare staffing with regional colleagues from across the sustainability and transformation partnership (STP). A successful project led through procurement teams put in place a new approach to challenge the agency market and expenditure. Steve said: “The Trust adopted a robust yet transparent stance with the agencies that has led to improved administrative processes and procedures and reduced the rates towards the agency caps introduced by NHS Improvement.”

In summary, Gary said: “As a trusted partner for the NHS and commercial health and care providers HealthTrust Europe is aware that providers need to be focused on tactics and strategies that make a difference to staffing shortages today but with their mind on their future plans.

“This could be through them saving money on agency to free up funds for wider workforce projects, integrating new technology or developing the pipeline for the next generation of healthcare staff coming into the UK.

“These actions can enhance the purchasing power of providers to enable further savings to be delivered in the future, freeing up funds to be spent on providing high quality care and services for their patients.”
