Dale Robinson Appointed Chief Operating Officer of HealthTrust Europe

School’s in for summer interns at HealthTrust Europe

Students from two local Birmingham universities will be spending their summer at health and care solutions provider, HealthTrust Europe (HTE), gaining valuable work experience skills to enhance their entry into the workplace.

The six internships are based at HTE’s headquarters in Edgbaston, across a range of business disciplines from financial analytics to Legal to marketing.

HealthTrust Europe is a solutions partner for health and care providers, helping them to source the best value products and services to deliver high quality patient care.

Emma Stewart, HR Business Partner said: “As part of our commitment to developing employees of the future we have taken on six interns.

“HealthTrust Europe is a trusted partner for the NHS and commercial health and care providers sourcing a wide range of services and products such as pathology reporting, endoscopy, and consultancy and advisory services. To enable us to do this a broad range of skills and expertise are needed, so we have a wide range of interesting and exciting careers.

“Our staff are extremely knowledgeable and have a wealth of experience in many fields that they are keen to share with our interns.”

The summer-long internships have been offered to five second year students, and one graduate who have been studying a range of disciplines including Law, Biomedical Engineering and Economics at Aston University and the University of Birmingham.

The students have been allocated roles, in line with their studies, which will help them gain valuable experience and knowledge about the workplace before they enter the world of work. As well as gaining sector specific knowledge and learning to use various specialist business software packages such as Salesforce, the interns are also developing essential “soft” skills such as teamwork, problem solving and communications skills. Amidst a tough graduate labour market, the internships are paid the national living wage and are designed to equip students with the best skills to enter the workplace confident and prepared.

Marketing intern, Kiran Mehat said: “Having the opportunity to work in an international organisation like HealthTrust Europe lets me develop my skills in the workplace and give me an idea of the career opportunities that exist.

“HealthTrust Europe really appealed to me as I wanted the opportunity to work for an organisation that is driven by the care and improvement of human life.”

HealthTrust Europe rolls out mental health first aid training for staff

Employees at healthcare solutions partner HealthTrust Europe (HTE) are being trained to spot the signs and tackle the stigma of mental illness in the workplace.

The mental health first aid courses are being delivered by Birmingham Mind, the largest independent mental health charity providing services in and beyond the City of Birmingham’s boundaries. The organisation is also HTE’s chosen charity of 2019 and half-way through the year of fundraising the company’s members of staff have raised £5,000.

The initial two-day programme was offered this summer to volunteers across the business which is based in Edgbaston, Birmingham. The aim of the training was to give them the knowledge and confidence to recognise signs of mental health problems, encourage someone to seek the right help, and to reduce the stigma around mental illness. This can range from mild anxiety through to the early signs of depression and suicidal tendencies.

Helen Wadley, chief executive officer of Birmingham Mind, said: “To tackle the stigma of mental health, it is essential that industry works together to support their local communities. It is a pleasure to partner with HealthTrust Europe who are taking proactive steps to place employee wellbeing at the centre of their business and create a healthy working environment.”

“The aim of these courses is to give everyone the knowledge and confidence to recognise signs of mental health problems, encourage someone to seek the right help, and to reduce the stigma around mental illness.”

Initially senior managers anticipated eight to nine staff members would volunteer for the training but were astounded when 26 signed up. Later this year complementary training will be delivered to 35 managers across the business. The next stage will be for all staff members to attend awareness training.

Ian Hadridge, associate vice president of business solutions, said: “As a mission-driven organisation committed to the care and improvement of human life, HealthTrust Europe already delivers comprehensive first-aid training to all employees. To continue this objective and to ensure the health and wellbeing of staff remain of top priority, mental health training is the next logical step to take.

“Like many employers HealthTrust Europe offers a benefits package that provides colleagues access to free, confidential counselling should they want it. However, the new mental health training teaches colleagues to be aware of the signs of mental ill health in others, and advises staff how they can help an individual whether it is in the workplace, at home or in any other setting.”

One in four of people will have problems with their mental health at some point. These problems range from the day-to-day worries that everyone experiences to longer-term serious conditions. Common mental health problems include; anxiety, depression, post-natal depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and phobias. About one in a hundred people will experience severe mental illness.1 

Each year, HTE chooses a charity partner in order to raise money and awareness for issues that are at the heart of our communities. Events this year included: a women’s boxing contest; a football match against West Midlands office technology partner, Altodigital; participating in endurance challenge, Wolf Run; and a sponsored haircutting. HTE hope to raise more money throughout the rest of the year.

Healthcare solutions partner publishes EU Exit mitigation plan

UK-based healthcare solutions partner HealthTrust Europe (HTE), today publish their mitigation plan to counter risk from the UK’s proposed exit from the EU to support the continuity of high-quality patient care.

Following a 12-month preparatory period working in partnership with their healthcare providers and suppliers, the mitigation plan includes updated contract terms and conditions, fixed pricing and contractual protections for nearly 300 NHS and commercial health and care providers.

HTE currently works with 148 Acute Hospitals and 140 Non-Acute Sites in the UK, helping them to source the best value products and services to deliver excellent patient care.

Following a review over the past year of the organisation’s readiness to support its customers and suppliers as the UK faces leaving the EU, HTE has prepared a risk mitigation plan to pro-actively evaluate areas that will better ensure customers are supported during a withdrawal.

As a result of the review, HTE has updated its contract terms and conditions in October 2018 which ensure three core benefits for the NHS and commercial health and care providers:

  • fixed pricing for the term of the contract with any delivery cost increases being the responsibility of the supplier;
  • contractual protection to any risk of late delivery, and
  • contract improvements including explicitly excluding “Brexit” as a force majeure event.

HTE has also updated standard contract terms and conditions addressing the supplier’s obligation for continuity of supply of products and services along with compliance to the new GDPR regulations.

Commenting on the mitigation plan and updated contract terms, Chief Executive Officer for HealthTrust Europe, Dennis Robb said:

“It was imperative these steps were taken, and we felt it was our responsibility to provide complete transparency for our customers, suppliers and the wider healthcare community of what we are doing, and that we are here for them during this time of uncertainty.

As part of an international healthcare organisation we can leverage over 50 years of experience and expertise in the face of adversity, we will continue to closely monitor the political and economic landscape and take every step necessary to support our partners in the NHS as well as commercial health and care providers going forward”.

The mitigation plan takes account of official guidance issued by the Department of Health and Social Care, as well as the views of HTE’s supplier community who were consulted in 2018 to assess potential risks to continuity of supply.

HTE runs the industry’s only national committed model Group Purchasing Organisation (GPO) providing a forum for shared best practice and peer discussion. HTE continues to work in partnership with its members to evaluate how this model can best support its partners.

Birmingham’s Medical Past on Display

Birmingham (14, March 2019) – If you had been alive 100 years ago you may have undergone surgery anaesthetised via an ether mask, received a vaccine via a huge stainless-steel syringe or used a ceramic inhaler to assist your breathing.

An eye-opening display shows some of the medical and surgical instruments used to perform procedures in the past and highlights how the healthcare we receive today has been revolutionised by technology.

Edgbaston-based healthcare organisation, HealthTrust Europe, is displaying old apparatus alongside some modern-day equivalents to highlight medical advances, coinciding with British Science Week.

The array of old devices, some of which look gruesome by today’s standards, has been kindly loaned by Birmingham City University’s Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences, which is based at its City South campus, also in Edgbaston.

Dennis Robb, CEO of HealthTrust Europe said: “This display brings to life how medical technology has developed over the decades and how fortunate we are for these advancements today.

The healthcare solutions we offer are clinically-led and we work in partnership with some fantastic suppliers of products and services across the healthcare delivery spectrum, acting as a bridge between them and healthcare providers to improve healthcare in the communities we serve. It is humbling for us to help bring innovation to the NHS and the private sector to create a positive impact on people’s lives.”

The old instruments on display include an appliance used during anaesthesia that contains a Sparklets bulb similar to those in soda siphons, an old-fashioned (and chilly-looking) stainless-steel bedpan, a mouth-gag and a lumbar-puncture kit.

Birmingham City University has been providing healthcare training since the 1960s, with 12,245 students graduating in subjects allied to medicine in the last decade alone. It’s School of Nursing and Midwifery offers a range of courses in adult nursing, child nursing and midwifery.

Lisa Abbott Associate Head of School for Nursing and Midwifery from Birmingham City University said: “We’re proud of our role in training the next generation of healthcare practitioners. This display is a chance for us to look back and realise how healthcare has evolved over the decades.”

Commitment to HealthTrust Europe’s mission results in huge fundraising total for chosen charity

Birmingham, England – Generous HealthTrust Europe employees have highlighted the company’s commitment to the care and improvement of human life by raising a total of £8,212.73 for the charity Duchenne UK.

During 2018 HealthTrust Europe members of staff took part in dress down and dress up days, a charity raffle, a cake sale, and awareness & educational activities. However, the major event was November’s five and 10k runs in Sutton Park which resulted in a massive boost to funds of more than £3,000. The total donation made via HealthTrust Europe’s JustGiving webpage was in the top three per cent of such pages in the UK for fundraising in November.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) affects 1 in 3,500 boys and is the most common genetic disease diagnosed in childhood and is caused by a lack of the protein dystrophin that affects the entire body. The illness almost always affects boys, and they tend to be diagnosed before the age of five. There are around 2,500 patients in the UK and an estimated 300,000 worldwide.

HealthTrust Europe Announces Dennis Robb as Chief Executive Officer

Birmingham, England – 1st March 2018 – HealthTrust Europe today announced the appointment of Dennis Robb as chief executive officer, effective immediately. As CEO, Robb will lead the UK subsidiary organisation of HCA Healthcare, which serves 146 acute hospitals across the United Kingdom, including NHS Trusts and HCA Healthcare UK.

Robb joined HealthTrust Europe in November 2015 as chief operating officer. As COO, he has strengthened operational performance, fostered staff retention and leadership development, and aligned the group purchasing organisation (GPO) with national healthcare contracting initiatives.

Located in Birmingham, HealthTrust Europe has grown employment opportunities in the West Midlands with an additional 27 full time positions, and promoted UK staff into management positions. Birmingham, England – HealthTrust Europe (HTE) is thrilled to announce that it has been selected by Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust to be its exclusive Group Purchasing Organisation (GPO), resulting in all three Trusts of The Alliance Local Delivery System (LSD) now active members of the GPO.

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Selects HealthTrust Europe as its GPO

Birmingham, England – 23 August 2017 – HealthTrust Europe (HTE) is delighted to announce that Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has agreed to participate in HealthTrust Europe’s Group Purchasing Organisation (GPO).

Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust is the UK’s fourth largest acute teaching NHS Trust, operating across three sites and serving a population of 2.5million people across the East Midlands. With over 1,700 beds and more than 15,000 staff, the Trust now has access to a range of clinically-led purchasing options that deliver high quality and clinically acceptable products including the HealthTrust Europe GPO model.
